For New Students Interested in the Suzuki Method:
In the Suzuki Method, also known as “Mother Tongue Approach”, the teacher and parent strive to create an immersion environment in which the child will easily learn to play music, just as all children learn to speak their native language.
One parent from each family attends each class, works daily with the child, and learns to play violin alongside the child. Through listening & step-by-step learning, the method developed by Shin’ichi Suzuki nurtures the child’s inherent language-learning ability.
In the individual lesson, parent and child meet with the teacher for 20 - 30 minutes, in order to learn new skills, and to reinforce and build upon previously learned skills.
The group class is for all the children, their parents and the teacher, and is for the children to play musicianship games, practice what they've learned in individual lessons (routines, songs, movement & violin skills), for motivation, and for performance practice.
The parent class is for parents and the teacher, without the children. Parents learn the routines, rhythms, and how to hold the violin and bow. Parents also learn how to play the first song, which is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Theme & Variations. Parents are asked to rent a full-sized violin for their own use during the Parent Class.
Parents will also establish a "violin practice routine" at home on a daily basis. At the beginning, this may just be a time when parent and child listen to the CD, or take a bow together. Later, we will build upon this and add violin skills to the practice routine.
